Parents’ skills as job opportunity
Parents’ skills as job opportunity
Project Description
This project was created to transform the perception of motherhood and fatherhood as employment barriers, turning them into strategic assets for employability. The central focus lies in identifying and validating the transversal competencies acquired naturally during child-rearing, such as leadership, time management, conflict resolution and financial administration. Faced with worrying unemployment rates in Europe, which particularly affect mothers and the young population in countries such as Spain and Italy, the initiative seeks to connect these vital skills with the demands of the current labour market. By professionalising the care role, the project aims to reduce labour market withdrawal and improve the competitiveness of parents in the economic ecosystem. The project not only offers a pathway back to employment but also fosters a corporate culture that values the soft skills developed in the domestic sphere. In this way, it seeks to mitigate the gender gap and enhance the professional growth of families in the European Union.
Objectives
- Train mothers and fathers in parenting and family management competencies that can be transformed into employment or self-employment opportunities (for example, in education, childcare, family mediation, social support, etc.).
- Improve family support teams and social services through specialised training in parenting skills and family support practices.
- Promote work–family reconciliation and reduce the risk of social exclusion for families with dependent children, especially in vulnerable contexts.
- Create training materials and tools that enable organisations to work on parenting as a professionalisable competency and as a resource for career development.
Implementation
Project implementation is based on the creation of training and support programmes aimed at fathers and mothers, which combine modules on parenting competencies (positive parenting, conflict management, childcare and education) with transferable work skills (communication, organisation, group work, mediation). These programmes are developed in family meeting spaces, through “snack-workshops” and other participatory activities where families reflect on their parenting practices and value their skills as potential professional resources. In parallel, training actions are organised for social services and education professionals in family support, so that they can guide and support these families towards employability and entrepreneurship pathways based on their parenting competencies, closing the cycle with the documentation and dissemination of good practices and open materials at European level.
Expected Results
Improvement of mothers' and fathers' capacity to manage the education and care of their children, identifying these competencies as potential constituents of employment opportunities.
Development of employability pathways for families that integrate parenting training and vocational training, facilitating their insertion into jobs linked to care, education, social support or family mediation.
Development of family support materials and guides on parenting and employability, available as open resources for administrations and social organisations.
Strengthening of the network of services and professionals working with families, with tools and interprofessional competencies to promote employability based on parenting skills.
