The «A» class
The “A” class: integrating and supporting students with autism in the mainstream classroom
Project Description
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects all individuals to varying degrees. It can be described as a complex, lifelong developmental disorder, characterised by a triad of qualitative deficits in social communication, social interaction and social imagination (Wing and Gould, 1979). In addition to these deficits, individuals with ASD often struggle with sensory hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive, gustatory and olfactory stimuli (Hinder 2004).
Objectives
- Foster the development of socio-emotional skills in the classroom, such as creativity, compassion and collaboration, alongside a solid arts education.
- Improve school inclusion and coexistence through active methodologies focused on art and collaborative work.
- Develop teachers' capacity to integrate innovative art- and creativity-based practices into the daily curriculum.
- Promote equal opportunities and the participation of all students, especially those with fewer opportunities, through an inclusive and participatory approach.
Implementation
The project is implemented through the creation and application of artistic and collaborative methodologies in the classroom: use of multidisciplinary projects, art workshops, dramatic activities and group dynamics that foster creativity and empathy. Teachers experiment with these methodologies in training and subsequently adapt them to their classes, supported by pedagogical tools and guides developed by the consortium. The project also provides for exchanges between school students and teachers from partner countries, allowing for the observation of good practices and the exchange of artistic and educational resources.
Expected Results
Improvement of students' socio-emotional skills (empathy, collaboration, creativity and compassion) observed in the classroom climate.
Innovation in didactic practices, with an increase in the use of art-based, project-based and collaborative methods.
Strengthening of inclusion and participation of all students, reducing the risk of social and school exclusion.
Development of materials and resources (guides, lesson plans, project examples) that can be used by other centres to replicate the experience.
