New Skills Development in Precision Agriculture
New Skills Development in Precision Agriculture
Project Description
Based on the Europe 2020 Strategy, this project drives the digital transformation of the agricultural sector through the concept of Industry 4.0, promoting precision agriculture to increase productivity and sustainability. The initiative integrates technologies such as IoT, Big Data and AI to develop “connected farms”, adapting production to a decentralised and efficient ecosystem. Focused on modernisation, it addresses the digital divide of an ageing workforce (more than 56% are over 55 years old) through training in new technologies. The objective is to transform value chains, ensuring European competitiveness, environmental protection and new business models based on knowledge exchange.
Objectives
- Help farmers and technicians acquire knowledge, skills and competencies in precision agriculture, so that they can redesign their agricultural production more efficiently and sustainably.
- Stimulate the adoption of innovative agricultural methodologies (GIS, sensors, variability maps, variable fertilisation and treatment) among agricultural workers and VET trainers.
- Create a training pathway and a VET curriculum in precision agriculture, adapted to different national contexts and the rural sector.
- Promote youth employability and entrepreneurship opportunities in the field of precision agriculture, contributing to the transition towards a green and sustainable economy.
Implementation
The project is implemented through transnational collaboration between agricultural VET centres, universities and precision agriculture organisations from several countries (Turkey, Spain, Italy, among others). An e-learning platform on precision agriculture is designed and tested, accompanied by a “beginner’s manual” and practical pedagogical materials aimed at both trainers and farmers. Partners carry out “on-farm” demonstration trials on real plots to validate the effectiveness of precision techniques (variable fertilisation, use of sensors and map analysis), and organise workshops, agricultural shows and training sessions in the field and in the classroom. In parallel, a curriculum/VET modules in precision agriculture are developed, which are tested in pilot groups and adjusted based on feedback from farmers, trainers and employers.
Expected Results
A beginner's manual on precision agriculture and a set of training and didactic resources (video, infographics, field exercises) accessible in multiple languages.
An e-learning platform and a VET curriculum in precision agriculture, validated and ready for use in educational and vocational training centres.
Improvement of the competencies and practical knowledge of farmers and trainers in the use of precision technologies, with an increase in the adoption of these techniques on their farms.
Strengthening of the European network of agricultural and educational actors, who share good practices, data and methodologies for the training and development of precision agriculture.
